I bought this book for my 14-year old and this is her review:Wendy, the main character, was funny, charming, and very believable, and her best friend Jennifer was just as witty! Wendy was my favorite of all the characters in the book, and each character was colorful and different and they all had their unique problems and emotions.
The story itself was amazing, with a believable main plot line and varying, supportive side plots. I love how Cynthia Toney has brought so many different themes into Bird Face! Many of them having to do with things that bother a lot of young teens, including best friends and the ups and downs that come with them, social expectancies and acceptance, bullying, girl-feuds, divorced/divorcing parents, boys, and the thresholds we have to cross in our teenage years before becoming certified adults.
It was incredibly hard to put down. I loved the characters and the stories; they almost literally grab you and pull you in like a fishing pole.

Bird Face Cynthia T Toney Chila Woychik Linda Yezak 9781935600435 Books Reviews
Ms. Toney's characters are skillfully drawn to reveal their depth and personality. The main character is warm, witty and wise. I cheered for Wendy as she rose above the challenges and reached out to those around her. A great read! Karen Blunt
Bird Face is a must read for all teenagers. The book deals with the problems, joys and sorrows of being a teenager. It had some great lessons for all of us, but especially for young people. I love to read, however, if a book does not interest me in the first few pages I do not continue. Bird Face started out interesting and kept me guessing throughout the whole book, I like that. I can’t wait for your next book, keep them coming Cindy!
I encourage people to get a copy of Bird Face. Cynthia Toney realistically captures what it feels like to be in junior high, wrestling with discovering who you are and finding where you fit. Wendy has to work through some of her own problems and insecurities while addressing some tough issues that her classmates struggle through. I like how Wendy finds her courage to do what is right for herself and others and how she grows and is blessed by her decisions. I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading more by Cynthia Toney.

The angst of junior high school! Cynthia Toney creates characters that remind me of the kids that I grew up with in my school. Without falling into the pit of stereotypes, every personality comes across as imperfect yet with something to love about them. Anyone aged ten and above can relate. Definitely worth the read.
Very happy to recommend this young teen book, Bird Face. Toney does not shy away from tough topics that are part of young teens' lives and presents it in an entertaining, engaging way. Especially a good read for teens who are not a part of the popular crowd. Thank you, Ms. Toney!
Bird Face may have a target audience of tweens, but this new grandmother found it thoroughly engaging. The author has captured the angst of those middle school years to perfection. I loved the observations of the main character, Wendy. They were at times hilarious and at other times quite poignant. The book explores many themes that are relevant to the times and can be used to open the lines of communication between parents and their young teens. The author also allowed the story to shed light on the fact there is so much more to each character than what may appear at first. This hopefully will open the hearts of those who read the book to see to the heart of other people, not just what is on the surface.
Well done, Mrs. Toney, well done!

Cynthia Toney's debut novel is beyond excellent. This novel not only speaks to teens, but it speaks to all of us. She addresses all the issues we faced as young teens as well as many more. This was a novel rich with heart, insight, faith, love and courage. Honestly, this book was so amazing, so graphic, so wide-reaching in it's depth and heart wrenching in it's honesty that I can only say "Awesome". It has been a long time since I have enjoyed a book so much or had such a hard time putting it down. Wendy, the main character was so lovable and I identified with her so much! I too went through the terrible angst of the young teen years when you have pimples and are laughed at and made fun of, bullied even, and had to endure so much. Everyone has to endure carrying their own cross. . . .sometimes of our own making. When Wendy realized that she could change her life by changing her attitude, so much changed for the better! This is a great coming of age book for young teens, but it also has something to offer to all of us! I highly recommend this novel to anyone!
